Broadcasts or Campaign Automations - Which type of message in email marketing?

You’ve got your account all set up, and now it’s time to start sending messages! :tada: Hmmm, but what kind of messages do you want to send? Let’s think about that for a moment.

In AWeber, you’ve got two main options:

Broadcasts: These are your one-time messages that go out to everyone on your list all at once. You can also schedule them for specific times and dates. Want to send an email to just a small group of people or a single person? You can use Broadcasts to target a specific segment instead of your entire list. These are perfect for things like weekly newsletters or big announcements you want to share.

Campaigns: These are your automated messages that kick in after someone signs up for your list or when a specific tag is applied (we’ve got more information on Tags for you.). Campaigns are great for sending a series of emails automatically—like a drip series that keeps your subscribers engaged over time. Selling an online course? You can set up a Campaign to automatically deliver each lesson!

Remember, you can always send broadcasts to subscribers, regardless of the campaigns you have set up. They can work independently of each other.

Just remember as best practice, you should use tags and segments to make sure you’re targeting subscriber segments - your readers may feel like they’re drowning in your content if they are receiving automated campaign messages and multiple broadcasts on the same day. For example: Keep your Campaign set to trigger On Subscribe, but when you send a Broadcast, target a segment of people who’ve already finished the Campaign. Just add a little “Apply Tag” step at the end of your Campaign to mark them as finished (don’t worry, only you can see the tag).

It will look like this once you have it added in to your Campaign:

Next, head over to Subscribers and search for Tag > Is > [Name of Tag]. Once you’ve got the results, save it as a segment. After you run the search, your screen will look something like this:

Next, go to Messages > Drafts and pick the Broadcast you want to schedule. When you’re setting up who the message should go to, just make sure you select your segment:

With this setting in place, your message will only go to subscribers who meet the segment criteria—aka, those with the specific tag.

At the end of the day, you can go with either type of message depending on the workflow you want to set up. No matter what, you’ll be staying connected with your subscribers and sharing all the good stuff you’ve got for them. Got questions about setting up this workflow? Or maybe you’ve already nailed it and want to share your wins? Drop a comment below—we’d love to hear from you!

I think it can’t be stressed enough the importance of segmenting your list of subscribers. By creating segments based on subscriber engagement, you can send the right message to the right people at the right time. It’s a big deal that can serve as a massive advantage for your marketing efforts to increase your bottom line. How so? Well, when you’re customizing content to send to your most engaged subscribers, they should receive a specific message enticing them to continue their patronage to your business. Same with your least engaged subscribers - you’d want to send them specific content to get them past the lurking stage and into the buying stage. Try offering a discounted rate, coupon code, insider tricks/tips, etc.

The awesome thing about both Broadcasts and Campaign is that you can build segments from both message types. So, whatever your path forward in sending content, rest assured that you can build segments for your engaged subscribers.

Curious if you’ll need to make new segments every time you send messages? Nope. Not necessary since segments are always dynamic. This means that any subscribers who fit the criteria of your saved segment will be automatically added/removed from the segment based on the criteria of your segment. This is a huge time saver for you so you can spend more of your valuable time focusing on what you do best :grinning:

Both! Here’s how you can consider using each:

Use Broadcasts to:

  • Write a weekly newsletter
  • Send one-off updates to segmented audiences

Use campaigns to automatically send messages that:

  • Welcome new subscribers
  • Send a coupon code (or any lead magnet) after signing up on a landing page
  • Share new blog and youtube content after it’s posted
  • Deliver a receipt when purchasing a ticket through an ecommerce page
