Is it better to publish a book only on Amazon and be bound by their restricted free copyright?

I am in the process of setting my children’s book up on Amazon. They give free ISBN #'s but then I can’t sell it on other platforms. If I buy an ISBN # from Bowker I can sell it on other platforms. I’m new at this. What would you do?

Hey Jean!

I am by no means an expert in this realm - there may be others here that can provide more guidance from first hand experience…

That said, I have looked at self-publishing myself, and I feel it really comes down to your long term goals.

If you’ll eventually want a wider distribution in bookstores, online shops, etc., then investing in a Bowker ISBN is probably the better play. You own your distribution and you ultimately have more control overall. No gatekeepers.

Would love to hear if others have thoughts?

Thank you, Chris. I like your perspective very much. I was thinking that way myself since I can’t predict the future and what I might like to do. Keeping my options open seems like a good idea.

Since the $150 Bowker charges for an ISBN and barcode opens you up to SO MANY other potential marketplaces, I feel it’s a small investment. Sure, Amazon is a massive market but it isn’t the only market.
