Setting expectations: Be Crystal Clear With Your Subscribers 🔮

You’re getting subscribers to sign up—that’s awesome! But if they’re not engaging like you hoped, you might want to check that you’re setting clear expectations at sign-up in regards to ‘what’ -and- ‘how often’ you’d be emailing them?

Just because someone signed up for dog training tips doesn’t mean they also want cat training tips too. When a weekly newsletter becomes thrice weekly, you’re asking for disengagement or worse - spam complaints.

You can set expectations in a few ways, like adding a note at the bottom of your sign-up form, in the confirmation message, or placing the information somewhere else on your site.

As long as subscribers know what they’re getting into from the beginning, you’re likely to see better engagement. Be clear upfront.

There are also a few good tricks to make sure you’re sending content your subscribers actually want to read.

  • Send broadcasts to segments of your subscriber list
  • Use dynamic content to include content tailored to each subscriber’s preferences

As your list grows, you’ll discover that your larger audience is comprised of smaller groups of people who have more specific interests that you can cater too as well. Avoid sending niche information to your entire list. Instead, consider sharing that information with only the people on your list who have shown interest in these topics.
